Starting point: The Turret of Trips - Nieuweweg 4, Tripscompagnie

Your journey starts in Tripscompagnie, where a former polder mill has been transformed into a unique place to spend the night: Het Torentje van Trips. Located amidst vast fields, this little turret is the perfect start for those who really want to escape the hustle and bustle. Here you wake up with the sun on the horizon and birds as your alarm clock. Whether you take a morning walk through the surrounding countryside or read a book in the afternoon sun, the atmosphere is warm, cosy and full of character.

Stop 1: Hermans Dijkstra Farm - Reinste Abdenaweg 1, Midwolda

Continue your route to Hermans Dijkstra Farm, an imposing manor farm with a culinary surprise. Here you sit down to a dinner that takes your taste buds on a journey through the region. The chef carefully compiles a changing menu, prepared with ingredients that are not only local, but also seasonal.

What makes this place extra special? The refined cuisine is served in a historical setting full of stories. The interior is a combination of art nouveau, art deco and chalet style. By eating here, you directly contribute to promoting local agriculture and sustainable gastronomy.

Stop 2: Country estate Fraeylemaborg - Hoofdweg 30, Slochteren

Not much further on is the enchanting Fraeylemaborg Estate. This medieval borg is now a museum, surrounded by a beautiful park that still exudes the original baroque style. Here you wander among centuries-old garden ornaments, tall trees and playful exhibitions: from the Ice Age to the present day.

The former treasure house serves as a restaurant and in the coach house you will find a museum shop and changing exhibitions. For a special experience: take off your shoes and walk the barefoot path. Here you will experience the landscape in a whole new way.

Stop 3: Picnic at Restaurant De Boerderij - Hoofdweg 28, Slochteren

On the edge of the estate you will find Restaurant De Boerderij: the perfect place to take a break with lunch, drinks or a picnic. Surrounded by meadows and trees, you can taste the flavours of the season here. Think asparagus from the region, strawberries from the farm shop or a surprising vegetarian optione prepared with love.

Don't feel like sitting inside? Order a picnic basket and find a nice spot in the greenery. The restaurant is not only culinary strong, but also conscious in choices: from vegetarian creativity to local products.

Stop 4: Church of Garmerwolde - Dorpsweg 69, Garmerwolde

The next stop will take you to the Church of Garmerwolde, a place where you will become quiet for a moment. This late Romanesque church tells its story through a mix of ancient vaults and modern design. Its ancient contours are enhanced by contemporary furnishings and educational elements, making it not only a heritage site but also a learning school for young and old.

End point: Holiday Church - Fivelweg 45, Zijldijk

The day ends in the quiet village of Zijldijk, where you spend the night in the atmospheric Holiday Church. Until 2009, psalms still sounded here, now it is a place to catch your breath. Think of a long wooden kitchen table for a sumptuous breakfast, a sitting area of scaffolding wood to sink into and a four-poster bed for a deep sleep. The serene atmosphere and the Groningen countryside provide pure relaxation. The Vakantie Kerkje is not just an overnight spot, but an oasis for those who want to slow down.

Whether you come for the history, the culinary delights or the serene silence of the landscape: this road trip lets you feel the real Groningen. This is all about attention: to your surroundings, to your travelling companions and to yourself. So get in, leave the hectic behind, and discover how rich simplicity can be. East Groningen awaits you, with open plains and open arms.
