Groningen province is a fine destination for a road trip in the Netherlands. Its picturesque landscapes and enchanting villages make for a road trip full of hidden gems. This route takes you to the very best spots in West Groningen. In this blog, we share with you some great locations in the west of Groningen. So start the engine and join the adventure.

1. The Sugar Garden, City Lab and Bamboo Lodge - The starting point of the road trip

Start your road trip in West Groningen at the most versatile place on the route: De Suikertuin. This is the creative hotspot in the city of Groningen. Explore this area and enjoy delicious street food dishes at Stadslab, then sleep in the Bamboo Lodge. So this place contains three hidden gems in one.

  • De Suikertuin is also known as Groningen's back garden. It is a creative hotspot with a city beach, among other things. So you can still have your feet in the sand in the middle of the city. Take a seat on one of the cosy terraces and listen to the music.

  • Stadslab feels like a festival. But besides the vibrant atmosphere, it is also the place to eat delicious street food. This place is great for lovers of vegetarian cuisine as there are plenty of veg options to choose from.

  • At the Bamboo Lodge, you imagine yourself in the tropics. Among more than 100 plant species, you forget that you are actually in the middle of the city of Groningen. This unique place is made entirely of recycled products and is therefore not only a hidden but also a sustainable pearl.

2. De Onlanden nature reserve - Relaxing in nature

After a good night's sleep, it's time to leave the city behind and unwind in nature. De Onlanden nature reserve is a young area and consists of feral hay meadows, colourful swamp forests and large bodies of water. If you are lucky, from the watchtower you can spot the marsh harriers, sea eagles, foxes, roe deer or the Exmoor ponies that live in this area. Or stroll along the waterfront and see if you can spot otters swimming. This special animal has found a nice home in Natuurgebied de Onlanden.

3. Tante Til Coffee & Tea House - A piece of nostalgia with a cup of coffee

After walking around in De Onlanden nature reserve, it is time to settle down at Koffie en Theehuis Tante Til. A perfect place if you crave a bit of nostalgia and local products. For instance, the tea comes from the Theefabriek in Houwerzijl and the coffee from Groningen coffee roastery Tik Tak. Many local products are also used in the kitchen.

4. Camping Marenland in Winsum - Overlooking a quiet marina

Then conclude your road trip through West Groningen by spending the night at Camping Marenland in Winsum. At this location, you have a beautiful view of Winsum's cosy marina. Choose from one of the many accommodation options. You can park your own camping equipment on the campsite or stay in one of the unique accommodations. Settle down in one of the rooms in the box bed hotel, relax in one of the comfortable bell tents or admire a beautiful panoramic view of the Groningen landscape from the sleepwalker.

Hopefully, you have been inspired to drive to West Groningen for a unique road trip in the Netherlands. Will you be hitting the road soon? Don't forget to share it with us? You can do so by using #heyhoneyguide on Instagram.
