From the beautiful dunes of Kijkduin to the unspoilt beauty of Ameland, the Netherlands has a lot of beach restaurants. Are you looking for the perfect place to relax, enjoy the sun and have a positive impact on people, animals and the planet at the same time? In this blog, I take you on a journey along six sustainable beach tents in the Netherlands. So pack your sunscreen and be surprised by these green gems on the Dutch coast.

1. Timbuktu - Wijk aan Zee

Timbuktu is not just another beach resort in the Netherlands, it is a haven for bon vivants. It is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, which is not surprising considering the casual and positive atmosphere that prevails here. The vintage carpets, coloured parasols and music blaring from the speakers contribute well to this.

Timbuktu strives to be as sustainable as possible. With 100 solar panels on the roof, a green energy contract and an electric boiler, this beach pavilion is truly committed to a greener future. But that's not all. They also do their best to minimise food waste, offset gas consumption by donating to Trees4all and serve dishes packed with organic and local ingredients.

2. The Shore - Scheveningen

Enjoy the sun on your head on the terrace or brave the waves during a surfing lesson. The Shore in Scheveningen is the home and meeting place for surfers, adventurers and nature lovers. Almost everyone who comes here has a passion for the sea, nature and sustainability. Feeling hungry after an adventurous afternoon on the water or a relaxing walk on the beach? Recharge yourself with a delicious pancake or pizza, prepared with organic ingredients and free of refined sugars.

This beach club is committed to keeping Dutch nature as clean as possible. They do this by heating shower water with solar boilers and minimising waste, among other things. What is so cool about The Shore is that they also focus on promoting awareness and education about sustainability among their guests.

3. Beachclub BIRDS - Kijkduin

Rattan chairs, exotic parasols with fringes, tropical plants, wicker hanging lamps and a mint-green bar. Anyone looking for an incredibly atmospheric and hip beach club should definitely visit Beachclub BIRDS in Kijkduin. The interior really is a treat for the interior design junkies among us!

Sustainability is also a high priority at Beachclub BIRDS. For example, the drinking water comes directly from the dunes and for every litre of water you buy from Made Blue, a thousand litres of drinking water goes to a third-world country. They serve beers from Bird Brewery, where a tree is planted for every litre of beer. They also use only sustainable cleaning products and are committed to a clean beach by cleaning up litter. And if that's not enough, they also like to spoil you with local and organic delicacies.

4. Beach pavilion Sjoerd - Nes on Ameland

Located on the beautiful Wadden island of Ameland, overlooking the beach of Nes and the raging waves of the North Sea, Sjoerd is the place you want to be. And who is Sjoerd? An authentic all-rounder where everything is about honesty, taste and hospitality. You can count on artisanal, local products such as genuine Amelander lamb here.

Did you know that Sjoerd has been voted the most sustainable beach pavilion in the Netherlands three times? That is not surprising when you see how committed they are. In fact, the roof is covered with both solar panels and solar collectors, and they only use 100% LED lighting. They also aim to work with local seasonal products as much as possible and use alternatives to plastic.

5. Club Zand - Castricum aan Zee

Castricum aan Zee is a gem where nobody lives and where there is no boulevard. That means more space, more freedom and less tourism. The ideal spot for a real Honeyguide spot: Club Zand. Plop down in the hanging chair and feel the sand under your feet. I'm sure the bohemian and relaxed vibe at Club Zand will put you in holiday mode immediately.

With a menu full of honest local dishes, they cook on induction to minimise gas consumption. Moreover, in winter this beach bar is heated with 100% green energy, generated by a pellet stove. And you know what else is great about Club Zand? For every online reservation and bottle of water sold, they donate an amount to The Plastic Soup Foundation to fight the plastic soup in the oceans and seas.

6. Boca Grandi - Kijkduin

Drawing in the sand, riding the waves and flying with the wind. All rules blur at Dutch beach tent Boca Grandi. The roof, made of palm leaves, offers the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun. Admire surfers venturing into the waves or learn to kitesurf yourself.

This is all about sustainability and minimising our ecological footprint. Boca Grandi recycles materials and combats food waste. They only work with partners who also have sustainability as a core value. Plastic has been replaced with cardboard materials and the drinking water is purified local dune water. Moreover, every bottle of water you buy is donated to The Ocean Cleanup Project. So at Boca Grandi, you can not only enjoy the waves, but also make a positive impact.

It is time to pack your beach towel and let us know which of the sustainable beach bars in the Netherlands you will be visiting. You can do so by using @honeyguide.nl/en or #heyhoneyguide on Instagram. Have fun!
