Antwerp is known for its vibrant culinary restaurants. From local specialities to international flavours. The city offers a wealth of options for any foodie. Whether you are looking for a nice place for a romantic dinner with your loved one or a lunch stop between shopping, you are guaranteed to find a suitable match here. In this blog, I share 6x hip restaurants in Antwerp that will tantalise your taste buds. Will you join me on a voyage of discovery?
1. Barchel - Van Breestraat 6
Barchel is definitely one of the hip restaurants in Antwerp you should visit. At this cosy café-restaurant, located in an Antwerp mansion near the city park, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch. Are you in the mood for the tasty 'Turkish Eggs' or the 'Flatbread Pulled Pork'?
When the sun beams down again, it's great to relax in the beautiful courtyard garden. But inside, too, you'll be very comfortable. The wooden herringbone floor, charming underground tiles on the wall, colourful paintings and ceiling-high windows create an inviting atmosphere where you want to stay all day. And oh by the way, Barchel also has a second location that can be found on the brooding Nieuw Zuid.
2. Restaurant 't Hofke - Vlaaikensgang 6
If you are looking for a romantic and atmospheric restaurant, Restaurant 't Hofke is the place to be. This hidden gem is tucked away in the winding alleys of the Vlaeykensgang, the oldest street in Antwerp. As soon as you step inside, you are embraced by the authentic atmosphere of the dark-wood interior and the treasures of brocante that take you back in time. It almost feels like you've discovered a secret passage to another world.
From burgundy escargots with garlic butter to home-made stew with dark beer. 't Hofke's menu is like a journey through flavours. It takes you on a culinary voyage of discovery. Slide your chair, weather permitting, into the beautiful courtyard garden and be enchanted by the stories that whisper between the centuries-old walls.
3. Moss - Volkstraat 11/13
Simple, pure and healthy. That's how MOSS describes itself. This hip restaurant in Antwerp feels like a living room where you wake up in the morning with an 'Avocado Toast' or a 'Blueberry Waffle'. At lunchtime, feast on the 'Burrata Salad' or the 'Funky Chicken'. You can count on fresh ingredients presented as art on your plate here.
The interior of MOSS exudes a Scandinavian atmosphere, with natural tones, wooden furniture and green plants. As soon as you walk into this gem, you immediately notice the long counter, generously filled with salads, delicacies and juices. Opposite the counter, round tables and a comfortable long bench invite you to take a seat.
4. Laundry bar - Melkmarkt 15
At WASBAR, students, business people and locals come together to relax and socialise. It is the ideal place to go to after a long day's work, or to catch up with your friends. Have a pile of clothes at home that needs washing? Bring it along, because at WASBAR, combining eating a famous Bagel Burger while waiting for your wash is quite normal.
The concept of WASBAR originated from an idea of two friends who were looking for a nice place to do laundry and enjoy a drink at the same time. In 2012, they opened the first WASBAR in Ghent, and since then there have been branches in several cities in Belgium. In Antwerp, WASBAR is located just steps away from the Meir and the Grote Markt. As you read, it is not one of the hip restaurants in Antwerp in this blog for nothing.
5. Tinsel - Sint-Paulusplaats 30
Located on the cosy Sint-Paulusplaats, Tinsel is the ultimate destination for lovers of hip restaurants in Antwerp. Here you can enjoy an à la carte breakfast or lunch with dishes like the brioche with strawberry- elderflower jam or creamy scrambled eggs with spinach. Discover seasonal dishes, refreshing drinks, excellent coffee and a fine atmosphere. Everything here is about good food and positive vibes!
Tinsel values local partnerships and thus supports the best home-grown products. Think, for example, of the free-range eggs from Heidi's Hoeve, the coffee from Andy Coffee Roasters and the natural wines from Roeland Fort.
6. Bardin - Mechelsesteenweg 102
Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and immerse yourself in an oasis of calm at Bardin. Upon entering, you are greeted by fragrant, fresh flowers on the tables and cosy background music that creates a homely feeling. Here you can relax completely while enjoying a delicious breakfast, a tasty lunch or just a good cup of coffee or tea.
Bardin is known for healthy, colourful dishes that not only taste good, but also look great. The chefs use herbs from their own garden, adding an extra touch of freshness and flavour.
Besides food and drink, Bardin is also a nice place where you can retreat and finally read that one book that has been waiting for you for months.
