Ready to tickle your taste buds? Brussels is a city full of surprises, and if you like good food, it is a walhalla of culinary hotspots. Eating out in Brussels means choosing from an impressive mix of innovative, sustainable and tasty places. In this blog, I take you through six hip restaurants in Brussels.
1. Restaurant Buddy Buddy - Laekenweversstraat 10, 1050 Brussels
Imagine: you are wandering through the city, your feet tapping over cobblestones and, your eyes searching for something special. And then you discover Buddy Buddy, a pink, minimalist nook on Rue des Drapiers. This stylish gem definitely belongs in the list of Brussels' cutest restaurants. The smell of freshly roasted nuts fills the air and behind the bar are baristas with spoons full of almond butter. Everything at this Brussels restaurant is stylish and 100% plant-based. The real eye-catcher is the space visually divided in two by contrasting wall colours.
In their own workshop, a few streets away, they roast organic nuts such as hazelnuts from Piedmont. They carefully process these into velvety butters. These butters form the basis for creative drinks like the Almond Butter Chai but are also delicious on your toast with a pinch of sea salt, or just... straight from the jar. For foodies who love eating out in Brussels, Buddy Buddy is a can't-miss stop.
2. Restaurant Lil Bao - Rue de la Cellebros 71, 1000 Brussels
Curious what this spot on the list of hip restaurants in Brussels has to offer? Lil Bao immediately stands out thanks to its bright yellow façade: bright, cheerful and unmissable. You'll also find that vibrant colour inside on the walls, the chairs and even the counter is radiant yellow.
Lil Bao serves delicious, airy bao buns inspired by Taiwanese street food, but completely vegan. Perfect if you want to eat out in Brussels and fancy something original. The menu is compact but creative. To me, the bao buns with pulled jackfruit or stewed aubergine look delicious. "One bao at a time" is the motto of founders Hsuan and Michal, who want to show that plant-based food is not only good for the planet, but also irresistibly delicious. Besides bao, dim sums and noodles are also on the menu. Or opt for the surprising dessert bao with banana and peanut butter.
3. Pizzeria Biga - Place Colignon 18, 1030 Schaerbeek, Brussels
Blue tiles, terracotta walls and soft lights on the wall give this Brussels pizzeria a modern, Mediterranean charm. Pizzeria Biga in Brussels serves Neapolitan pizzas with character: airy, light and full of flavour. The secret? The 'biga', a naturally fermented pre-dough that creates a cloud-like texture. The pizzas are generously topped, fresh from the wood-fired oven and perfect to pair with a bottle of wine from next door - literally, as the wine shop next door delivers the natural wine to your table. Personally, I can really recommend the 'Pistacchiosa' with creamy pistachio pesto and stracciatella, SO tasty.
Extra special: the in-house mozzabar with daily fresh burrata, smoked provola and fior di latte from local ateliers. Or opt for a kombucha or kefir from Brussels. This isalcohol-free, fresh and full of probiotics.
4. Restaurant Bouchéry - Alsembergsesteenweg 812/A, 1180 Brussels
In green Uccle, one of the most charming neighbourhoods of Brussels, lies Bouchéry. One of the city's most unusual restaurants. Here, chef Damien Bouchery cooks with the seasons, with vegetables playing the leading role. The menu includes surprising combinations like kohlrabi with apple and kiwi, served with homemade sourdough bread and drinks like apple-laurel kefir. Everything here is about simplicity and attention. The interior is warm and natural: mud walls, wooden furniture, linen curtains and an open kitchen that cooks on an open fire. In summer, dine in the wild garden behind the restaurant.
This restaurant in Brussels goes beyond taste alone. It has its own vegetable garden and composts all organic waste. This takes sustainability to the core. Bouchéry is the place for those who want to eat consciously and enjoy pure, seasonal flavours.
5. Restaurant Entropy - Place Saint-Géry 22, 1000 Brussels
Are you looking for a place where you not only eat well, but also eat out with a good feeling? Then Entropyis without a doubt one of the nicest restaurants in Brussels. Located in the heart of the city, this hip Brussels restaurant combines fine dining with sustainability and social impact. Chef Elliott Van de Velde serves a surprising five-course menu in which residual streams, seasonal vegetables and fermentation play the leading role. Think dishes like crispy beetroot skin or fermented berries. Everything is 100% plant-based and surprising every time, exactly what you expect from a restaurant that dares to push boundaries.
With every euro, you support the Hearth Project, which tackles food waste and helps people in vulnerable situations. The interior is also perfectly in line with the sustainable philosophy, with circular materials such as wood remnants and designer lamps made of mushroom mycelium: a sustainable alternative to plastic or foam. Whether you're a local or a traveller looking to sample city life, eating out in Brussels takes on a deeper meaning at Entropy.
6. Restaurant Flamme - Romaniastraat 56, 1060 Sint-Gillis
At Flamme, one of the hippest restaurants in Brussels, everything revolves around the power of fire, which is where the name comes from. In the open kitchen, you see how ingredients are roasted, grilled and smoked over open flames. This not only provides a spectacular sight, but also deep, smoky flavours. Flamme serves dishes to share, with a creative twist and plenty of seasonal produce. You might taste a pita roll with yoghurt cream and figs, or a perfectly grilled steak with kimchi. The wine list also surprises. Think fresh natural wines and rich biodynamic bottles, carefully chosen to match the dishes.
And when the sun shows itself? Then enjoy a seat on the terrace, ideal for a long evening full of fire and flavour.
