Almere is not only the youngest but also the greenest city in the Netherlands. Are you looking for nice places to visit during a weekend break in Almere? In this blog, I share 6 tips with you so you know exactly where to go. Honeyguide went out with a group of talented content creators and discovered Almere's most unique spots. Grab your camera and head out past photogenic locations.
1. Impressive buildings in the city centre - Be inspired by architects
Almere is on the list of architectural places in the Netherlands and for good reason. During a citywalk, you will learn the stories of the impressive buildings. Honeyguide set off with photographer Richard Terborg along photogenic and unique buildings.
Visit De Nieuw Bibliotheek and gaze over the roofs of Almere. From this point it is clearly visible that the inner city is built in different layers. The top layer consists of houses with roof terraces and gardens. You can't see any of this from the street but from the higher floors of the library you have a great view of this.
Another impressive structure was designed by René van Zuuk and is called The Wave. This building has a scaly facade, making it a photogenic spot. Looking from a distance, it is immediately clear why the building got its name. It creates a flowing motion that actually looks like a wave. We also definitely recommend visiting the colourful La Defense. The glasswork contains a special film that creates an explosion of colour when sunlight shines on it. Really quite extraordinary!
2. In the Oostvaardersplassen - Spot unique animals and birds
After admiring modern architecture, it is nice to check out the nature near Almere as well. Honeyguide went out in the Oostvaardersplassen. This swamp area is home to unusual bird species and several unique grazers. If you are lucky, you will spot Konik horses, cattle, foxes, red deer or rare bird species such as the white-tailed eagle.
Nature is the perfect place to unwind. And what could be better than a yoga class in the middle of nature. Honeyguide was allowed to participate in this and breathe in the fresh outdoor air during relaxing yoga exercises. And as if that were not already special enough, we also enjoyed a unique view.

All that relaxation naturally makes you want something tasty. At Paviljoen de Oostvaarders, the Sunday Breakfast Club is open from 10.00 on Sundays. Indulge yourself with fresh bagels, homemade smoothies and warm croissants while enjoying the wonderful scenery in the Oostvaardersplassen.
3. Visit the Kunstlinie - Perfect for the art lover
The Kunstlinie, in the centre of Almere, is a place you won't want to miss as an art lover. The changing exhibitions ensure that you can admire new works of art every time. Honeyguide visited the exhibition Schapeshifters which showcased raw beauty and versatility of Urban Arts & Culture.
Admire iconic murals, sculptures, contemporary illustrations, fashion, photography and different styles such as 3D, abstract and cartoon. Which artwork would you like to pose for and create artful images?
4. A vegan lunch at The Black Cockatoo - Homemade vegan cakes & brownies
The dishes at lunch café The Black Cockatoo are largely made with organic and local ingredients and are also 100% plant-based. This fun vegan lunchroom is right in the centre of Almere. Tantalise your taste buds with delicious, homemade vegan cakes, brownies, chocolate chip cookies and banana bread. Or do you prefer savoury? Then the Loaded Fries Rendang or a vegan croquette sandwich are definitely recommended.
5. Sloop sailing on the Weerwater - A relaxed afternoon
What could be more fun than admiring a city from the water? In Almere, hire a sloop from the Esplanade and in no time you will be sailing on the Weerwater. Here you will pass works of art and have views of the city. A fun activity for an afternoon of fun with friends or to celebrate a special occasion in a unique way.
6. Dine at Woodstone Pizza & Wine - Stone-oven pizza
What could be a better combination than wine and pizza? The pizzas you taste at Woodstone & Wine are made with love in the stone oven located in the middle of the restaurant. Dinner is complete with one of the delicious wines. The wines tell a unique story and bring out the flavours of your pizza. Would you like a gluten-free, vegan or low-calorie pizza? No problem at all! These options are all on the menu.
