Although Valentine's Day may be somewhat commercial, for many people it is still a day full of love, warmth and lots of hearts. You can hardly ignore it on 14 February, and to be honest, it is still kind of fun. The ideal time for a romantic dinner with your sweetheart or someone you love.

Every year, I go in search of a unique place to enjoy this romantic day. In this blog, I share my 6 favourite restaurants where you can dine romantically on Valentine's Day.

1. Mediamatic - Amsterdam

At Mediamatic in Amsterdam, you are taken through the creative process of dishes filled with stories and emotions. This restaurant is 100% plant-based and links its dishes to problems in society. The products supplied here are local and seasonal and all the suppliers have a passion for food. So you can be sure you're in the right place here.

For many of its visitors, Mediamatic is therefore a vegan Valhalla, but people with a love of a piece of meat or fish preceded you as well. In addition to its special dishes, you will also be seated uniquely here. Mediamatic has cosy greenhouses where you take your seat during dinner. You overlook the creative breeding ground of this progressive place and really only share this dining experience with your company. Look out over the IJ and enjoy each other and the taste explosions on your plate.

2. The Wagon - Tilburg

When you walk out of Tilburg station, Eetbar de Wagon immediately catches your eye. This special restaurant consists of two 1930s train carriages, transformed into a lovely place where you can dine with unique wine and special dishes. The layout of this restaurant is also mixed up due to its small size. So you have a bar with a view of the kitchen, a compartment with authentic decor and, finally, a nice terrace in front of the train carriage where you can have a nice seat.

Even when you look at the menu, you seem to be travelling by train. The menu is divided into morning rush hour, afternoon rush hour and evening rush hour which means you can visit the Wagon throughout the day. For me, it is a fine place to dine with Valentine. The unique atmosphere and creative dishes all fit the theme.

3. Restaurant House James - Ugchelen

Restaurant Huisje James is a place to get your Burgundian heart racing. Hidden in the woods, on the edge of the Veluwe, a former country house has been transformed into Huisje James. Everything about this restaurant screams warmth, cosiness and cosiness: there is a lovely living room atmosphere. Here, the experience is central. From arriving by golf cart to ending your evening by the fireplace, Huisje James certainly deserves a place in this list of special restaurants.

The thatched country house has several rooms where you will be seated during a culinary evening. For an amuse bouche and aperitif, you start in the old workshop before settling down in the restaurant and letting the chef surprise you with classic dishes full of unique twists. The kitchen inspires you with local and seasonal produce. Fresh vegetables and herbs are sourced from the restaurant's own vegetable garden. Here, you don't have a menu. No! You let the chef surprise you. Are you curious to see how the chef enchants you? Then take a seat at the chef's table. That way, the food is shoved right under your nose.

4. Outside the pit - Lage Vuursche

At Buiten in de Kuil, you sometimes forget for a moment that you are not at home. This restaurant is located in the woods on the edge of the Drakensteyn pit. You really are in the great outdoors here. It is an idyllic spot in the middle of nature filled with tree trunks, hay bales and animal pelts. A lovely place for a picnic during the sultry summer evenings, but also for a romantic dinner during Valentine's Day in the cold winter days. Then snuggle up behind one of the wood-burning stoves.

Here, everything revolves around the season. Buiten in de Kuil tries to surprise you all year round with local and seasonal products. The menu changes with the view you have. Cheers to autumnal forests or to awakening spring nature. You'll always find something to lick your fingers at here.

5. Lighthouse Island - Amsterdam

Vuurtoreneiland really falls under the heading of 'special dining for Valentine's Day'. This place can only be reached by boat and is located on a unique piece of nature just outside our bustling capital Amsterdam. On this island, you will find free-roaming animals and unique plants and flowers. You dine in a transparent greenhouse where it feels like you are in the middle of nature, both in the summer months and in the cold winter months. On Valentine's Day, you can relax here under a blanket by the crackling fireplace.

An evening of romantic dining almost feels like an adventurous mini-holiday. With the boat trip, the various courses and the unique surroundings, you are sure to have a full evening's schedule. The evenings on Lighthouse Island are long, intimate and you escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life for a while. Get closer to your sweetheart and eat well!

6. Restaurant Bentinck - Amerongen

A contemporary restaurant in a historically unique location where cooking is at the highest level. This restaurant, decorated with metropolitan interiors, is located in the former stables of historic Buitenplaats Amerongen. With an open kitchen on one side of the restaurant and views of the castle on the other, your evening of romantic dining takes on an almost magical atmosphere.

At Restaurant Bentinck, it's all about pure flavours: fresh and local produce is harvested on the castle grounds and French gastronomy takes centre stage. There is always something delicious on your plate. The chef at this restaurant also likes to surprise you during your visit. So you will hear stories behind the dish on your plate and the latest finishing touches are prepared right in front of you. Regional, tasty, healthy and, last but not least, sustainable. That all goes hand in hand here.

Are you already dreaming away at these warm and unique places? In my mind, I have already scoured every menu and chosen every course. They are restaurants where you can sit back, dine luxuriously or enjoy a good glass of wine and a drink, so you can fill your own romantic dinner during Valentine's Day. Whether you celebrate love on Valentine's Day or get together with friends to toast the bachelorette, these places are actually nice for everyone.
