An interesting brewery is something that makes the heart of many a beer lover, including myself, beat faster. Especially breweries with a good story make their beer taste a bit better immediately anyway. And good news, because sustainability is a top priority at several Dutch breweries. Where to find these breweries? I like to inspire you with these five sustainable (micro)breweries!
1. Gulpener Brouwlokaal - Gulpen, Limburg
In the magical hilly landscape of South Limburg, you will find the Gulpener Brouwlokaal. This traditional microbrewery is the only one in the Netherlands that grows its own hops! In doing so, Gulpener decided to be the first in the industry to use only environmentally friendly grown raw materials and to set up a local partnership with farmers from the region. The brewery has two of its own water wells with which they generate energy in a sustainable way. If any water remains after production, it is not washed away but cleaned and reused. Finally, Gulpener makes workplaces available in the company for people with a distance to the labour market. All positivity, this place!
The brewhouse consists of a microbrewery, taste library, beer theatre, study lab, beer shop and eatery with its own terrace and hop garden. Book a guided tour, workshop or tasting to delve further into beer and afterwards, take a bottle (or several) home with you.
2. Fortuna Brewery - Oost-Vlieland
A brewery on beautiful Vlieland with its own water and energy source where we work with ingredients from the island as much as possible. Yes, Fortuna' s beers are a real experience. The various beers are brewed with a lot of love and in a sustainable manner, and you can taste Vlieland's unique flavour in every sip.
Want to know more about the brewery and Fortuna beer? Book a guided tour and meet the brewers. They will be happy to explain everything about the brewing process, the secret recipes of the Fortuna beers and why Vlieland is such a unique place to brew beer.
3. German & Lauret Brewery - Everdingen, Utrecht
OK, just for the setting alone you definitely want to have visited this brewery. Fort Everdingen, once part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, is today the special home of brewery Duits & Lauret. The brewery includes the shop and the tasting room, which is located in the former army classroom.
Sustainable beer brewing, that's what they do here. Rainwater is collected via the roof and, via kettles, the filtered water ends up in the water basin underground. This basin then serves as the source for brewing the German & Lauret beer.
I can definitely recommend a tasting session where you get to know the different beers. And yes, chances are you will pop into the shop afterwards to still get a bottle for home.
4. DAVO Brewpub - Deventer, Overijssel
Craft beer, brewed with the help of solar energy. That's what toasts are made with at DAVO Brewpub.
At this special brewery, the first beers were brewed in 2012, initially for own consumption. Since then, the brewery offers 12 regular beers, the team has expanded and you can find DAVO Brewpub at no less than three locations, namely in Deventer, Arnhem and Zwolle. At all DAVO Brewpub's bars, you can simply order a beer at the bar but a beer tasting or a tour of the brewery is also a possibility.
5. Jopenkerk Brewery - Haarlem, North Holland
Did you know that Haarlem was once one of the most important brewing cities in the Netherlands? Yes, definitely: over the centuries, Haarlem was home to several breweries. Today, you can still taste this history in the Jopen church, where the impressive copper brew kettles of the Jopen Craftbeer stylishly fill the space.
Jopen beer is brewed according to the centuries-old Haarlem tradition and that, among other things, is what makes this beer so special. From the first floor in the Jopen church, you have a perfect view of the brewing activities and the impressive kettles. Dive deeper into the world of beer here during a guided tour with tasting.
I don't know about you, but by now I've developed an appetite for a craft beer. And all these positive stories around the beer will surely enhance the taste!
