Ameland, too, was occupied by the Germans in WWII. The Amelanders were ordered to demolish all newly built holiday homes and build bunkers in their place. Today, a former kitchen bunker houses the Ameland Bunkers Museum.
Why you really want to visit this place
The small-scale museum is unmanned and it costs just €3 to enter through the gates. Afterwards, you can spend at least an hour: there is an awful lot of information on display. You will find images from the war, various personal stories from islanders, a memorial room and when you walk outside towards the dunes, you can descend into a real bunker that is very well preserved. All in all, a very impressive museum where you will learn a lot about the impact of WWII on Ameland.
