When you think of Germany, you might think of the autobahn, German ‘gründlichkeit’ and cities like Berlin with their vibrant underground scenes. Green hills, vast lakes and spirituality probably don’t spring to mind straight away. But perhaps that’s only because you’ve never heard of Seezeitlodge in Saarland.
When I arrived at Lake Bostal, the largest recreational lake in south-west Germany, it felt as though I was discovering a different side of Germany. A side where forests and water define the landscape, where time seems to pass a little more slowly and where a centuries-old history is still tangibly present.
Millennia ago, the Celts lived here. A people who were guided by the position of the sun and the stars, possessed extensive knowledge of herbs and paid close attention to the connection between people and nature. Although much of their knowledge has been lost, Seezeitlodge seeks to breathe new life into this wisdom. Not as a museum piece, but as inspiration for a modern way of relaxing and living.
A hotel that blends into the landscape
The Seezeitlodge has just 97 rooms, but boasts over 5,000 square metres of wellness facilities. The hotel is situated right on the shores of Lake Bostal and is surrounded by forests. Saarland is still relatively unknown to international tourists, making it a lovely destination for travellers who are consciously seeking to escape the hustle and bustle.
What struck me straight away was how naturally the hotel blends into its surroundings. Wood, natural stone and large windows ensure that the indoors and outdoors almost merge into one another. From virtually every room, you can look out over the lake or the surrounding hills.
But the connection with the local area goes beyond architecture alone. During the guided tour, I learnt how the entire hotel concept is built around the region’s Celtic heritage. Their vision of living in harmony with nature remains a key source of inspiration.
Celtic energy
According to the Seezeitlodge, the hotel is situated in a special location. A geomancer surveyed the area and discovered various energy lines which, according to ancient Celtic traditions, were regarded as places of power. Whether or not you believe in this, it is striking how many guests describe the same experience: deep tranquillity, a better night’s sleep and the feeling of truly disconnecting from the outside world for a while. You can see this philosophy reflected everywhere. This is not the sort of hotel you come to just to spend the night. It’s a holistic concept where nature, wellness, gastronomy and mindful living come together.
My first impression
As soon as I stepped into the lobby, the space felt both impressive and warm. It was as if the building was inviting you to switch off straight away. My shoulders dropped naturally as I was welcomed with a smile and a glass of homemade lemonade. On the floor, I noticed three golden lines running through the space. These refer to three key moments in the Celtic calendar: the spring equinox, the summer solstice and the winter solstice. On these days, the sunlight streams into the hotel precisely along these lines. A subtle detail, perhaps, but one that shows just how much thought has gone into the design.
Wellness in tune with the rhythm of nature
Not long after, I swapped my clothes for a bathrobe and headed for the spa. Outside lies the Celtic sauna village: a circle of different saunas surrounding a large fire pit. Temperatures range from 55 to 95 degrees, after which you can cool off in a plunge pool or the fresh open air. What I found special is that wellness here goes beyond saunas and swimming pools. Every day, an extensive programme of activities is available on the hotel’s app. From sauna infusions and Pilates to herbal walks and meditation sessions. These activities are linked to various themes, based on the Seezeit re.connect concept. For example, you can choose to focus on boosting your energy, achieving mental balance, building physical strength or, conversely, deep relaxation.
My boyfriend and I opted for the wellness programme. We started the day with a Pilates class and an invigorating herbal steam treatment. Afterwards, we hopped on our bikes for a ride around the lake. The seven-kilometre route takes you along the water’s edge, through the countryside, and ends back at the hotel, where I took a dip in the natural swimming pool and floated amongst colourful water lilies.
Later that afternoon, I was lying in one of the relaxation rooms, aptly named the ‘Happiness Room’. Through the large windows, I looked out at trees swaying in the summer heat. At that moment, I realised how long it had been since I’d simply gazed out of a window.
No phone. No book. No to-do list. Just be.
Mindful eating
Conscious choices are also made when it comes to food. At breakfast, my eyes wandered over a buffet full of local produce: honey from the hotel’s own beehives, freshly baked bread from the hotel’s bakery, colourful vegetables and fresh juices. Throughout the day, guests can visit the juice and cake bar, where homemade cakes and healthy snacks are on offer.
In the evening, you can take a seat on the terrace overlooking the lake. As the sun slowly disappears behind the hills, a three-course dinner is served, featuring regional ingredients and Celtic herbs. Many of the produce comes from Saarland itself and is selected to suit the season. You can really taste the difference on your plate.
Cleverly designed
Later that evening, I flopped down on my bed and looked up at the ceiling. It had been a warm summer’s day, but the room felt pleasantly cool. Remarkably, this was without air conditioning. The hotel uses an innovative water system that keeps the temperature a few degrees lower than outside. In addition, clever architectural choices provide natural cooling. The wooden slats that wrap around the building like a cloak create ever-changing patches of shade throughout the day.
These are details you might not notice straight away, but which say a lot about the hotel’s sustainable vision.
Bringing peace and tranquillity home with you
As I slowly drifted off to sleep, something struck me. This place is all about contrasts. Heat and coolness. Activity and tranquillity. Luxury and simplicity. The longest and shortest day of the year. Day and night. Perhaps that is precisely what the Celtic philosophy is all about: recognising opposites without pitting them against one another. During our stay, we were able to move between those extremes, and yet everything felt in balance. I’d love to take that feeling home with me. For those moments when my diary is bursting at the seams, my phone vibrates non-stop and the days seem to fly by. It is precisely then that I want to think back to the Seezeitlodge and remind myself that peace of mind does not always depend on your surroundings. Sometimes it simply begins with consciously slowing down.
Love,
Femke
