National Park Nieuw Land is a true jewel formed by the largest reclamation project in the world: the reclamation of Flevoland. The youngest national park in the Netherlands is located at the bottom of the former Zuiderzee. Recently, we got to explore the Oostvaardersplassen, part of this area, during an adventure Instameet. And of course, we can't wait to share our experience with you!
Nieuw Land National Park - A man-made natural paradise
Nationaal Park Nieuw Land is more than just a park; it is a man-made natural paradise and a haven for many birds, of which the white-tailed eagle is the icon. Herds of heck cattle and konik horses graze in the marshes, which has also led the area to be called the 'new wilderness'. Not for nothing was the film 'The New Wilderness' shot here.
National Park Nieuw Land is divided into four subareas: the Marker Wadden, Markermeer, Lepelaarsplassen and Oostvaardersplassen. The Instameet destination, the Oostvaardersplassen, impressively demonstrates that nature can arise spontaneously in unexpected places. Initially this area was labelled as industrial land, but as there was no immediate need, the marshland was sown with reeds and left alone. Thanks to this unexpected turn of events, nature took over the land and developed into a beautiful wilderness.
On excursion with eco coach and guide - Through the marshlands
The Oostvaardersplassen, located between Almere and Lelystad, is best discovered with an adventurous excursion by eco-cart. During our visit, forest ranger Rosan and volunteer Rolf from Staatsbosbeheer take us through the marshland. Along the way, they share fascinating facts and stories. Rosan compares the area to a McDonald's drive-in, but especially for birds. Birds land here to rest, breed and eat before continuing on their migratory journey.
Experience the silence and beauty of the area - Cycling, walking and boating
Nationaal Park Nieuw Land is not only a paradise for parading birds and other animals, but also for people. In this vast landscape, visitors can truly enjoy the silence and beauty of nature. Pick one of the many walking or cycling tours and explore the area. In between, pause at the many viewpoints and vista panels that invite endless gazing over the landscape.
Other must do's during your visit::
- Taking the ferry to the Marker Wadden
- On safari with the forest ranger
- A tour of the Lepelaarsplassen
Tip: Don't forget to bring your binoculars when you go on an adventure here.
An adventurous barefoot walk - Barefoot
After the eco-cart, the Instameet gets even more adventurous with a barefoot walk led by instructor Evert from Aldefit. We take off our shoes and socks, put our bare feet on the ground and experience nature in a unique way. Despite inconveniences, such as puddles after rain, the walk becomes an enriching experience. Focusing on walking makes us quieter and more receptive to the environment. As if to create more space in our heads, which causes our senses to be extra activated.
Pavilion Oostvaardersplassen - A restaurant with a view
Pavilion de Oostvaardersplassen is this day's central base. Unique to this place is the panoramic view from the restaurant on the Oostvaardersplassen. Here we started our journey through the Oostvaardersplassen and enjoyed a tasty lunch. As icing on the cake, we were treated to hot chocolate at the end of the day.
After a day full of discoveries and natural beauty, we say goodbye and start our journey home. If it is up to us, we will soon return to this beautiful and vast area. There is no reason not to spend a free day at Nieuw Land National Park. It's one of those places where you walk around and keep asking yourself why you haven't been here before. Are you curious too? Then take a look at the Oostvaardersplassen Almere website.
