As a potter, this subject is of course right up my street. In this blog, I share some of my favourite pottery workshops. All of them small-scale, at unique locations or in atmospheric studios and workshops. Hosted by passionate potters and ceramists. And not entirely unimportant: each pottery or ceramics workshop is one you can join even without a large group.

Is pottery/ceramics sustainable?

Did you know that pottery contributes to conscious living? For instance, we often work with local clay - a natural material - reusing leftovers. Each creation - from mug to vase - is made with love and care. Little works of art to cherish that often last a very long time. Increasingly, glazes are free of harmful substances and are fired in energy-efficient ovens. Should you care about making a sustainable choice, the latter are the most important points to look out for.

1. A ceramics workshop at Atelier Klei & Zij - Dordrecht, South Holland

Eva's pink atelier is located in the heart of Dordrecht. Eva's love for ceramics is in her genes; she inherited her passion for ceramics from her mother. What started as a hobby has now grown into her own studio. Join us in the studio of Klei en Zij and get started with hand moulding during a ceramics workshop. You will mould your own jewellery dish, cup, flower plate or whatever you like. After your creation is dry, dip your brush in the glaze and bring your creation to life with colour.

What to expect from the workshop:

  • The workshop takes about 3 hours;
  • After the workshop, your creation is fired in a ceramic kiln. After 3 to 4 weeks, the item will be ready in the shop. Shipping is also possible for a fee;
  • The workshop costs € 70 per person;
  • Including all necessary materials, good coffee and tea, a discount voucher to spend in the boutique and a very nice experience.

More information about this ceramics workshop can be found here. Want to get a taste of the atmosphere in advance? Then check out this reel on Instagram.

2. A pottery workshop at Atelier B Keramiek - Westerhoven, North Brabant

During this Pottery Workshop, you will learn the tricks of the trade from the enthusiastic Iris. In her workshop in Westerhoven, she makes the most beautiful creations. She also likes to share her passion for turning with you during a workshop. In a small group of up to four people, you will learn the basics of pottery with a potter's wheel. Make your own playful coffee cup, decorative vase or, with a bit of bad luck, a little misfire. Iris will finish all items beautifully after the workshop and provide them with a white glossy glaze. Will you soon be drinking coffee from your own cup?

What to expect from the workshop:

  • 2.5 hours of slowing down, discovering and playing with clay;
  • All materials, including clay and tools. Iris finishes and glazes all creations (max. 2 creations per person);
  • Personal guidance from an enthusiastic ceramist;
  • A drink and some goodies;
  • The workshop costs € 95 per person.

Check availability and more information here. Are the workshops full? Then keep an eye on the website or sign up for the newsletter. You will then be notified automatically.

3. Ceramics workshops by Kleimegen - Nijmegen, Gelderland

At Kleimegen, you can choose from many different workshops. Apply different techniques to mugs including moulding, decorating and embossing. Make your own hand-formed tableware during the 'handforming' workshop. Or make a woven bowl in three hours. Kleimegen also often offers fun themed workshops such as 'Making a Christmas wreath out of ceramics'.

What to expect from the workshops:

  • The workshops last between 2 and 3 hours;
  • During the workshops, you will be introduced to various techniques;
