My favourite discoveries in a new city are almost always shops and restaurants with a good story. Places that are relatively undiscovered and aware of the impact they have. Fortunately, more and more small-scale entrepreneurs are popping up who are taking action in creative ways. So too in historic Harderwijk, where, besides shopping, you should definitely stay for dinner.

1. Happy girls - Hondegatstraat 17

Take a leisurely browse in this world full of vintage with a cup of slow coffee and (oh what the heck) a low-sugar snack. Blije Meisjes is familiar with all vintage markets and also helps me on my way in terms of fashion terminology. It turns out that vintage is not a general term at all, but refers to second-hand items from the 20s to the 80s. Retro actually turns out to be new, but inspired by old. And Upcycle is the process by which old fabrics have been transformed into garments that are valuable again. Either way, Jeanette, the girl behind Happy Girls is happy to help raise awareness around fashion.

2. Ratatouille - Vischmarkt 4-6

In this restaurant, vegetables play the leading role and the ingredients in the kitchen of master chef Wim Zwaart are all organic and local. A conscious restaurant after my own heart. If you like food at all, you should book a table at Ratatouille.

3. Patrice Patisserie and Ice cream - Hondegatstraat 4

Leave a little room in your stomach for dessert, because an ice cream at Patrijs is a must-do in Harderwijk. At this small patisserie and ice cream parlour, they bake and melt authentic pastries and ice cream, with a little touch of glamour. Not unimportantly, they use local produce from the Veluwe as much as possible when making all that sweetness.

4. Farmers' shop Het Melkhuisje - Hoogstraat 42

Out and about in Harderwijk without a stop at Het Melkhuisje? Impossible. This little shop on the Hoogstraat is a true paradise for lovers of real flavours. No mass production here, but craft and passion, captured in bottles and jars.

Upon entering, you smell the aroma of freshly cut farm cheese and see shelves full of local delicacies: velvety jams, creamy organic milk and surprising delicacies you won't find anywhere else. Like discovering a treasure chest full of flavour. And when in doubt? Owner Dicky knows exactly what you need. With her warm smile and endless knowledge, she guides you past the tastiest finds.

5. Piekado - Donkerstraat 32

At Piekado in Harderwijk, you will find gifts that go beyond a pretty ribbon and a bow. Here, every gift takes on an extra layer of meaning. The shop is run by people with mental disabilities, who work with love and craftsmanship on unique creations.

At the back of the shop, the workshop is buzzing with energy. Here, paintings, jewellery and home accessories are carefully conceived and handmade. No mass production, but pure craftsmanship - each piece carries a personal story.

So, are you looking for inspiration for a day out in Harderwijk? Then follow my sustainable shop and eat route in this Hanseatic city or drop by one of my favourite spots. Made with love.

With love,
Amanda
