Are you planning a weekend away and looking for an original bed and breakfast to spend the night in Friesland? We will gladly help you on your way. From a B&B with hot tub, to sleeping in a lighthouse and a bed and breakfast where you moor a kayak. These are our favourite accommodations and B&Bs in Friesland. Including fun things to see and do in the area. Saves you some searching 😉. That will be great kayaking in Friesland!

A night on the water in B&B Oan 't Wetter - Bed and Breakfast in Dokkum, Friesland

Within walking distance of the centre of Dokkum, you will find B&B Oan 't Wetter. At this Bed and Breakfast in Friesland, you sleep in your own private cottage on the waterfront. In summer, you can lounge here with a drink on the mooring jetty or go out on the water with the kayak (included in your overnight stay). In the evening, fire up the hot tub to steam in peace before going to bed. B&B owner Marieke makes sure you wake up with a generous breakfast. A wicker basket full of goodies - read fresh croissants and orange juice - is delivered to your front door. A good base for a day out in Dokkum. Honeyguide ambassador Marion already visited B&B Oan 't Wetter once and shares her experience with you in this article.

Things to see and do near this bed & breakfast

Walk into Dokkum to wander around this fortified town, or hire an electric sloop to sail through De Schreiershoek. You can enjoy a delicious coffee with phenomenal Arretjescake at Koffiebar Knus and a nice lunch in the courtyard garden of KB Food (vega-friendly).

2. A night out for art lovers at B&B Arte Suite - Bed and Breakfast in Workum, Friesland

Above a former post office in the heart of Workum, you sleep among old masters and contemporary art heroes. Owner Marianne has a passion for photography, art and a background in interior styling, and it shows! Sleek, stylish and with atmosphere; in this Bed and Breakfast in Friesland you will be amazed. After a day strolling through the Eleven-city of Workum, you crawl into your big bed. In the morning, Marianne pampers you with a pampering breakfast that is, to say the least, exquisite. So, planning a weekend trip to Friesland? Then B&B Arte Suite in Workum is a golden tip.

Tips in the vicinity of this bed & breakfast

From the B&B, you can best discover Workum by means of a Kuiertocht (3.7km). During this walking route you stroll (Frisian: kuierje) past characteristic buildings in the centre, via narrow paths and bridges to the outskirts and back. After your walk, recharge your batteries at coffee studio El Cafetín espresso. Art lovers should not miss the Jopie Huisman Museum - a tribute to the Frisian painter. Also, the living room studio Portret yn Pastel by pastel artist Linda van der Waal is a special place to take a look inside.

A little more time? At 10 minutes' cycling distance from B&B Arte Suite you will find the lighthouse the 'Toarnstje van Reid' on the dike by the IJsselmeer. This little white lighthouse feels like the end of the world. For years, lighthouse keeper Reid and his wife Cornelie lived here and built their own self-sufficient biotope. A place with a unique story of living together with nature. Beautifully captured in a series of visual reports that you can also listen to on The Lighthouse Around.

3. At Dromen aan Zee you spend the night in a lighthouse - Bed and Breakfast in Harlingen, Friesland

Are you looking for an original overnight stay in Friesland? This is your chance to spend a night in a lighthouse (and now bed and breakfast) at Dromen aan Zee. If you want to stay here, be early, as you have to book the lighthouse suite months in advance. But, it's worth it. After an evening walk in Harlingen harbour, climb up the steps of the lighthouse. Watch the sun set together from your bed and stay a while longer in the morning with your champagne breakfast (optional extra). All the ingredients for a romantic weekend away in Friesland.

Tips in the vicinity of this bed & breakfast

17th-century canal houses, picturesque streets and plenty of atmospheric harbours. Harlingen lies on the Wadden Sea and the salty air is in the air. Absolutely unforgettable is a dry land cruise on sailing ship Actief from Historic Sailing. Honeyguide Marion experienced such a trip and wrote about her experience in this article.

For landlubbers, canal Zoutsloot is a must. Formerly the centre of the Frisian salt trade, today this street is simply a photogenic canal street. Settle in at Restaurant 't Havenmantsje to savour the taste of the Wad over lunch, or toast with a local beer at Havenbrouwerij Het Brouwdok. Before you head home, also score a Harlingen tile - the Frisian version of Delftware - made from Wadden Sea clay since 1598 at Harlinger earthenware & tiles.

4. Sleeping in the old Poldermill de Swarte Prinsch - Unique accommodation in Tytsjerk, Friesland

Dreaming away under the sails of an old polder windmill is wonderful. This original overnight accommodation on the Frisian Wadden Sea coast is surrounded by nature. Inside, the mill has been transformed into a trendy B&B with authentic details. From the bed, for instance, you can look through the glass ceiling at the mill's wooden cog wheel. On a beautiful day, relax in the surrounding garden and watch the many birds living there from afar. At night, you do well to take a nap in the grass with a rug as well. In fact, this area is so dark that on a clear night you can see the Milky Way. You can arrange your own breakfast at the Swarte Prinsch ; your stay is on an accommodation basis. But with Leeuwarden 15 minutes away by bike, it's a treat to stop by a local bakery in the morning.

Tips close to this accommodation

Leeuwarden is packed with places and activities you'll want to put on your list. These are our favourites for a day out in Leeuwarden in a nutshell. The tastiest fresh breakfast is at The Bakery and unique shops in beautiful buildings can be found on the Voorstreek. Lunch is best in Leeuwarden in an old bridge keeper's house at Stek. Then walk the miniature people route to really zoom in. But also look up and take a good look around because Leeuwarden is full of murals and street art.

5. Sleep in a tree house, wooden house or chapel at Het Kleine Paradijs - Original overnight stays in Easterein, Friesland

This hidden pearl is a small oasis among the meadows of Friesland. An island surrounded by small waterways, far away from motorways and city bustle. At Het Kleine Paradijs, you will find the most unusual places to stay. From wooden writers' huts - where authors can work inspired on their next book - to a little red chapel and tree houses. In the mini shop on site, you can get fresh rolls, juices and spreads in the morning. Founders Linda and Matthijs make sure you feel completely at home and recharged. And if you want some help with that, there is room to talk or just turn inward with coaching. A Frisian retreat of at least two days.

Want to leave with fresh energy? Then a visit to Bolsward or Sneek (both 10 km away) is worthwhile. In Sneek, score a famous Sneeker Boterdrabbelkoekje at Haga's Boterdrabbelkoekenfabriekje. In this cute little shop, they make the cake according to old tradition. Photographers, put Broerekerk Bolsward on your list. This church has a glass roof and therefore great light.
