The province of vast fields, meandering rivers and picturesque villages. Do you already know what I'm talking about? Exactly, Gelderland! Here you spot charming farms, smell the scent of freshly cut grass and life always seems to go a little slower. Among the greenery and tranquillity, you will find plenty of hidden places where you can spend a lovely night. From an old ship in Nijmegen to a luxurious haystack in Zoelen. Gelderland has bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) that not only fulfil your sleeping needs, but also let you taste the real Gelderland charm. I am happy to share a few of these gems with you.
1. Opoe Sientje - Nijmegen
If you have ever dreamed of sleeping on a ship, B&B Opoe Sientje in Nijmegen is the place in Gelderland to experience it. Located in the Lindenberg harbour, this monumental ship from 1885 lies in the middle of the river Waal. Each room is unique and has a cosy seating area, private bathroom and a view you won't soon forget.
From film nights to art exhibitions: there is always something to do here. Don't forget to visit the special see, experience and do museum, where a new exhibition about the river can be discovered every three months.
2. Where It Wonders - Megchelen
Hidden away in the green Achterhoek, near the German border, is B&B Waar Het Wondert. Here, Rosemieke and Erik welcome you in their wooden cottage in the middle of a rustic orchard. You have your own garden, living room, kitchen and bathroom here. Don't feel like being the kitchen princess? Breakfast and even dinner can be arranged for you!
Take your furry friend for an adventurous walk through the nature of Gelderland, chop some wood for the stove in the B&B and unwind with a good glass of wine by the fireplace. What makes this place extra special is Rosemieke's ceramics studio. This is where she creates her works of art with clay. In the shop, you will find handmade pieces to take home.
3. B&B Bij ons op Zolder - Zoelen
A luxurious haystack surrounded by the orchards of the Betuwe: that is B&B Bij ons op Zolder in Zoelen. Here you can enjoy the cherry blossom in spring, but it is also a wonderful place to unwind in other seasons. With three rooms, a spacious kitchen and a living room, this bed and breakfast in Gelderland has everything you need for a nice weekend away with the family.
Start your day actively with a walk through the Zoelen Woods or a relaxing paddle on the Linge river. End with a yoga class in the attic, a relaxing massage, or a visit to the wood-fired barrel sauna with cold plunge pool. It doesn't get any better than this.
4. Sleeping in the woods - Apeldoorn
A glass roof, a crackling wood-burning stove and a view of greenery: welcome to Sleeping in the Woods in Apeldoorn. Here, you wake up to sunbeams dancing through the trees and a bird concert that gets your day off to a perfect start. Throw open the garden doors and step straight into the forest for a walk. You might spot some curious boars, deer or squirrels.
The cottage can accommodate four guests (two adults and two children) and has been lovingly restored by owners Michel and Mariëlle. In the morning, they spoil you with a finger-licking breakfast: warm croissants, Greek yoghurt with honey, fresh fruit, granola and even homemade brownies.
5. B&B Casaprisco - Wells
This converted sheepfold is anything but basic. With a hot tub under the stars and a private terrace surrounded by the meadows of Gelderland, this B&B in Putten called Casaprisco is a party to sleep in. You'll enjoy yourself here as a couple or with up to eight people.
In the farmyard, a jolly mess of animals provides extra cosiness. Piglets, dogs, chickens, sheep and lambs make your stay even more fun. Feel like going out? Hospitable owners Sandra and Caspar are happy to share their best walking and cycling tips. And as an ultimate bonus, Caspar, with his years of experience as a physiotherapist, will help you completely relax with a wonderful massage.
