5x nights out in nature in Belgium

On the edge of an organic vegetable garden in Walloon Brabant is a wooden cabin where everything revolves around simplicity, attention and good food. The atmosphere is warm: natural materials, soft tones and a terrace overlooking beds full of mint, beetroot and flowers. At La Cabane du Potager, you pick your own breakfast and learn more about regenerative agriculture: a method that restores rather than depletes the soil.

The owners regularly host cooking workshops in which seasonal vegetables from their own garden play the leading role. What's on the menu changes each time and depends entirely on what the country is giving at the time.

In the south of Belgium, just below Bastogne, there is a collection of wooden huts among the trees. No TV, but a wood-burning stove. No unnecessary luxury, but a warm bath under the stars. Each treehouse is nice to spend the night in thanks to its large steel windows, which offer wide views and reconnect you with nature.

At Nutchel Forest Camp, you are invited to disconnect from your daily routine and rediscover the joy of simple things. You will make your own campfire, read a book in a hammock and wake up to the sound of birds singing. Adventure overnight, but with style.

A wooden staircase winds up between the trees. Five metres above the ground, a cosy treehouse awaits, complete with large bed, wooden interior and views of the babbling river. The name says it all: Mon Lit Dans L'Arbre means 'my bed in the tree'. And that's exactly what you get. Each cabin is hand-built, from natural materials and with attention to detail. Rough logs and branches run right through the interior; you literally sleep in the middle of the tree here.

The owners of these nature cottages in the Ardennes organise eco-building workshops and build the huts together with local builders, producers, craftsmen and artists. This not only limits the impact on nature, but also keeps the connection with the region tangible.

Les Cabanes de Rensiwez was founded by Olivier Berghmans, who built huts with his twin brother as a child. Above ground, below ground, wherever. Years later, he swapped the world of finance for this project, returning to that original cabin dream and creating this perfect night out in Belgium.

Scattered along the river Ourthe are ten huts, each with its own atmosphere. Some on stilts, others half hidden in the greenery. You sleep here in wooden cottages with natural stone baths, fires and large windows overlooking the forest or the water. The lines are soft, the materials local, the furnishings warm but understated. Here you don't have to do anything, except maybe listen to the river, or read a book by the fire.

Whoever says sustainable cannot be beautiful has never been to Bast. This tiny house in Belgium is a wooden cabin on stilts on the border of a wooded slope and the Hesbaye meadows. The cabin is located in the fruit region, so you can enjoy beautiful blossoms in spring and fresh fruit on the trees in autumn.

Environment tip: hiking trails of the Landscape Triennial start right next to the cabin, where you will encounter art and silence spots along the way. A little further on, you will find an old field chapel or an orchard shop where you can buy pear juice from its own fruit. Then end your day on the terrace overlooking grazing sheep. Peace and quiet with a golden edge.
