With the birds chirping happily and the sun showing its rays more and more often, there is no doubt: spring is on its way! This can also be seen in the fruit trees that are starting to bloom again. Go on a blossom tour and be surprised by the different varieties and colours, such as the bright cherry blossom. Which place should you really go to? Find out in this blog!
A small blossom guide - The different colours and shapes
With so many different blossom trees, it might be difficult to see which one is right for you. To help you get started, I have created a little guide for you:
-
The apple blossom has light pink colour and thin, round leaves. It usually blooms from late April to early May, depending on the region.
-
The pear blossom is white in colour and resembles little bubbles grouped along the branches. This blossom, like the apple blossom, usually blooms in late April to early May.
-
The plum blossom also has a white colour and is often slightly larger than the apple and pear blossoms. During flowering, this tree has no leaves. This blossom can be admired from mid to late April, i.e. just before the other fruit trees.
-
The cherry blossom has a beautiful white-pink colour with a distinctive light sweet scent. It grows in early April to mid-May, depending on the weather.
Curious about the current state of blossom? Then download the free Blossom Valley app. It contains all the information you need during your blossom tour.
1. The fruit basket of Limburg - Along pear and apple blossoms
South Limburg, especially Haspengouw, is known as the fruit basket of Limburg. Here, white pear blossoms and pale pink apple blossoms come into full bloom in spring in a hilly landscape. During your blossom tour, you will pass castles and the banks of the Meuse.
Highly recommended: Would you like to experience this landscape in a unique way? Take a blossom tour with a green golf cart through Bilzen, in the middle of Haspengouw. There are beautiful routes to follow during the blossom period. Or how about a picnic with local produce amid the blossoming orchards?
2. Discover the Betuwe in Zuid-Beveland - Touring, tasting and learning
The blossom trees are blooming in Zeeland too, mainly on the picturesque Zuid-Beveland. Some affectionately call this area the Zeeland Betuwe and with good reason. In fact, Zuid-Beveland ranks second as the largest fruit-growing area in the Netherlands. Between the dykes, villages and green hedges, orchards lie like colourful patchworks. During your blossom tour, pause at a farmer or grower and snack on tasty pears, berries, blackberries or apples.
Tip: Want to know more about fruit growing? Visit the Fruitteeltmuseum in Kapelle. Here you will discover the development of fruit growing in Zeeland and learn about different fruit varieties.
3. Blossom in the well-known Betuwe - The fruit garden of the Netherlands
From the Betuwe in Zeeland, we travel to real Betuwe. Be guided along scenic country roads, where you will be taken past various blossom trees. In spring, these trees envelop themselves in a blanket of white-pink blossoms. The most beautiful places in this region are Geldermalsen, Buren and Landgoed Mariënwaerdt. Very famous are the Appeldijkje and the Lingedijk between Beesd and Tricht. The Betuwe lends itself perfectly to a road trip along (cherry) blossom in your own country.
Tip: Want to admire the blossoms in a special way? Go on an adventure in a Volkswagen bus and follow a predetermined route with fun stops.
4. Along the longest pear avenue in Drenthe - 7 kilometres, 1100 pear trees
Ever heard of the Dokter Larijweg in Ruinerwold? This winding road is also known as the Perenlaan. Along this 7-kilometre-long road are around 1,100 pear trees, making it even the longest orchard in the world. Every season, you will be enchanted by the white blossoms here. Especially in late April, it is an insane view. Explore by car or on foot along the route past historic farmhouses with thatched roofs.
Tip: Don't miss the annual blossom fair that takes place every April in the yard of museum farm De Karstenhoeve. Here you will find not only the most colourful plants and flowers, but also organic regional products. The fair also offers workshops and the opportunity to dance during live music performances. Keep an eye on the Drenthe.nl website for the latest information on dates and activities.
