The Klöpkeshoes in Berghum
About this hidden gem
You used to find many of these small houses on Twente farmyards. They were inhabited by Roman Catholic unmarried women. The name "klöpke" and "klöpkeshoes" (knocking house) comes from a time when Roman Catholic church services were forbidden. By knocking on doors, women invited their fellow believers to secret church services.

This piece of cultural history has been beautifully restored by local residents. You can visit it and in bad weather it makes a special shelter. Take a break and rest at the picnic area set up by local residents for passers-by.
