Fort Honswijk
About this hidden gem
On an area of just a few square kilometres, the Island of Schalkwijk has no less than four forts, including Fort Honswijk. This largest and impressive fort was built between 1841 and 1848.
Why you really want to visit this place
The fort is part of the New Dutch Waterline. The defence work is therefore hidden in the landscape, hidden from view by a fort rampart with trees and bushes. You have to know how to find this architecturally outstanding spot, iconic for the New Dutch Waterline. In collaboration with the other forts on the island, the fort had to seal off the Lek River for defence. Today, you can visit the fort and thus get a taste of this important piece of Dutch history.
This is how they (and you) make a difference
- an old fortress is kept in honour
