When Japan was discovered as a holiday destination at the beginning of the 20th century, rich people travelled by ship to this fascinating country. The travellers fell in love with the Japanese gardens, which were laid out with such care and balance. Marguerite M. Baronesse van Brienen, then owner of the Clingendael estate, was another such person. She therefore set up the first Japanese garden in the Netherlands in 1910, something that ensures the garden's high historical value. Some attributes actually come from Japan and the vegetation is also based on it. A walk through the garden is a special experience.
