Fort Lunet aan de Snel

History

About this hidden gem

A defensive work that now belongs to a water fort of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.

Why you really want to visit this place

The Lunet is located on the Lekdijk on the Eiland van Schalkwijk, a stone's throw from Fort Honswijk. It is a small but characteristic fort which was renamed a water fort after a restoration. The fort owes its name to the small river Snel, which runs from the east side towards the Blokhoven polder. A visit to the Fort introduces you to the theme of water. The educational centre provides numerous examples of water use: defence with water, protection against water, the use of water for food production and the importance of drinking water.
